What is hypnotherapy?

The mind is like an iceberg. Only a small part of an iceberg is visible above the surface of the water and this is similar to the conscious mind; the part of the mind which is responsible for everyday thoughts, analysing information and making decisions. Below the surface is the subconscious mind; the much larger part of the mind which deals with memories, emotions and the central nervous system. It is this part of the mind that stores all of the individual behaviours and responses that make us who we are.

Hypnosis is a natural and safe state of mind in which you are aware of everything you experience. Although often mistaken as a form of sleep, hypnosis is actually an altered state of awareness where the subconscious mind is very receptive and alert. During hypnosis, the subconscious mind becomes more receptive to suggestion and hypnotherapy uses this process to communicate with the subconscious mind and suggest new thought or behaviour patterns.

What is Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)?

Closely linked to the field of hypnotherapy, NLP explores how we experience the world around us, the language we use and our behaviour patterns, to find out how they interact with each other and how this affects the way that we respond in certain situations. NLP uses various therapy techniques which are designed to work on both a conscious and subconscious level to replace pre-programmed old behaviours and responses, with new, more useful and positive ones.

What are the benefits of hypnotherapy and NLP?

Hypnotherapists and NLP Practitioners offer a calm and confidential space in which to explore life problems and issues, whilst helping you to make the changes that you need to move forwards in your life. There are different types of hypnotherapy that can be used and these include suggestion hypnotherapy, analytical hypnotherapy, cognitive hypnotherapy (also known as HypnoCBT) and regression therapy. One or more different types of therapy may be used depending on your individual needs and situation.

About Me

I began my initial training as a Hypnotherapist with the Northern College of Therapeutic Hypnosis in Leeds, gaining Diplomas in both Therapeutic Hypnosis and Clinical Hypnotherapy. Following this, I achieved certification as an NLP Practitioner and since then, I have continued to develop my therapy skills with further training in Psychotherapy, Mindfulness and CBT. I am also trained in the Rewind Technique, which is a method for helping people who are experiencing high anxiety conditions such as Phobias, Trauma and PTSD.

I have been in practice since 2007 and am an Accredited Member of The National Hypnotherapy Society; the UK’s only hypnotherapy organisation to hold a register which is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. Alongside this, for several years, I was also a member of the society’s Professional Development & Supervision Committee, which was responsible for overseeing CPD and supervision standards within the organisation. Therapy Sessions

During your first session, we’ll discuss your situation in more detail, including your past experiences and goals, along with your role in therapy sessions. You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and then we’ll move on to the therapy part of your session. This may involve a blend of Hypnotherapy, NLP and Counselling, combined with other talking therapies as appropriate. There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach in therapy because everyone is different.

At the end of your session, we’ll talk about what you can do at home before your next appointment. I may give you an audio download to listen to, or you may be asked to complete other therapy tasks such as keeping a diary or practising self help techniques. These activities are designed to enhance the work done during your sessions and enable you to develop new skills and responses to help you achieve your goal(s).

In future sessions, we’ll talk about your progress since your last session and then continue with your therapy. Your sessions are about working together to help you make the changes that you need to get to where you want to be. Hypnotherapy, Counselling and other talking therapies have a good track record in helping people to make lasting changes. However, motivation and participation are the real keys to your success, so you need to play your part too.

Every situation is unique and people respond differently, depending on the type of therapies used. Many people see me for between 4 to 6 sessions and often notice positive changes after the first or second session and sometimes people may take a little longer. People often begin to feel differently within a few weeks and sometimes just a few sessions are all that is required. Just because you’ve experienced a problem or issue for a long time, it doesn’t always mean that it will take a long time to let go of it.

Free Online Consultation

If you have any questions or are unsure whether therapy is right for you, I offer a free 20 minute online initial consultation via Zoom. This is an opportunity for us to meet, discuss what you’d like to change and how we can work to together. I’ll also explain the different therapy options and we’ll talk about the number of sessions you might need.

Sara Pugh

My name is Sara Pugh and I am a Hypnotist, Movement Teacher, Neuro-therapist and Biochemist.

Why work with the nervous system and brain?

  • The brain receives input, this comes from eyes, ears, skin, joints via receptors
  • The input travels up the spinal cord to the brain. The brain analyses the input, compares it to all other pasts experiences, attaches meaning to the input and makes a decision
  • The brain produces an output this is usually movement but also organ response, blood pressure changes
  • The path to creating a better body and a better brain lies in ensuring this input, decision and output sequence is working correctly.

Hypnosis

I use a mixture of hypnosis and neurology to work with the brain meaning I have helped lots of people help with a wide range of issues. I work to reduce or eliminate negative issues such anxiety, fear, anger, addiction, pain and to increase and improve positives states such as confidence, strength, resilience, mobility, creativity and peace. To be honest if it’s not listed or something unusual, spiritual or embarrassing, please ask, because I will help you if I can and if not I will tell you straight away.

I deal with the person sat in front of me, with a unique method of Rapid Neuro Hypnosis. I can do content free sessions if you don’t want to tell me what the issue is. I am quick at hypnotising as I come from a stage hypnosis and entertainment background, so I am used to distractions, time constraints, difficult people and having to prove myself. This means that most of the session you pay for is spent on solving your issues, not putting you into hypnosis.

Neurological conditions

Regarding neurological conditions, I have lots of experience with Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, early stages of dementia and strokes. I am have presented at Parkinson’s UK Harrogate AGM twice and I am currently working with the chair of the Parkinson’s UK Harrogate branch on ‘Hypnosis for Parkinson’s. I offer movement and brain based therapy for people with Parkinson’s and dystonia at a reduced rate.

I also work with the visual, vestibular system (inner ear) and relevant brain lobes post TBI (traumatic brain injury), such as whiplash or concussion to correct issues which arise or persist months or years after the initial trauma. If you think about it most people have had some kind of head injury in the past, have you?

Movement

I teach Pilates classes, but I include lots of other movement disciplines in the sessions to add value.

‘The body is like a machine, it’s designed to move’
‘Movement is man’s best medicine’

Hypnosis, movement and nervous systems aren’t just a job, they are a passion for me…..when you meet me you will understand.

Testimonials

“I have two neurological disorders, Parkinson’s and MS, which makes walking very difficult. After a session with Sara I find great improvement in my balance and posture, which helps my walking. Sara explains carefully and clearly how the pathways to my brain need to be “exercised” to help re-connect to my limbs. Sara has a whole range of things that will alleviate a broad range of symptoms – ranging from exercises to a programme that runs on my laptop – with lots of things in between. I am already recommending Sara to other members of the Parkinson’s Harrogate branch.”

Renee Dickinson, Chair Parkinson’s Harrogate

“Tonight was the first time I’ve ever seen sheet lightning. It lasted hours. Because of you I stood by the window and took a video. Still buzzing so many fears were taken away! The fear of spiders which you didn’t even mention is still gone! This is the first time in years walking home without feeling like an elephant is sitting on my chest!! I feel amazing!! Thank you x”

Mel Fisher, NHS Administration – Hypnosis for multiple phobias

Clinical Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, NLP, EMDR, EFT & Reiki

Karen is a fully insured registered Clinical Hypnotherapist, NLP, EMDR, EFT and Reiki Practitioner. Karen is a member of the GHR, CNHC and GDPR compliant. Karen has several years’ experience in private practice and works in a hospice as a volunteer complementary therapist offering valued and supportive therapy to patients and their carers.
Karen runs regular private clinics via an appointment system at The Tower Clinic and offers on-line therapy sessions via Skype, Zoom, Teams or WhatsApp. She offers both a caring and confidential service, professionally tailored to suit the individual needs of her clients. Karen works closely with her clients to achieve positive life changing goals in as short a time frame as is practically possible. Positive life changing results can often be experienced within 2 – 3 sessions, however, as we are all uniquely different it is impossible to predict exactly how many sessions a client will need. This is usually determined by the complexities and how deeply rooted issues are found to be. Karen often uses regression therapy to release complex or deep rooted issues by establishing new learning patterns, through visualisation, metaphors or imagery. Karen is a strong believer in the benefits of regression therapy which is something she demonstrates to student hypnotherapists. Karen’s toolkit is extensive and she adopts a multi-modal approach in her practices. Karen has experience working with a diverse range of issues such as;

  • Stress, Anxiety, PTSD, Fears, Phobias
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Pain Management
  • Weight Control and Virtual Gastric Band
  • Pregnancy & Childbirth
  • Menopausal Support
  • IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
  • Hypertension
  • Confidence, Self Esteem & Motivation
  • Exam Nerves/Public Speaking/Improving Memory

Hypnosis is a proven effective treatment, for using non-intrusive techniques to help to bypass your conscious mind, helping clients to overcome many problems. Hypnosis helps clients to eradicate unwanted habits or behaviours, supporting clients to find relief from specific emotional issues or assisting clients to build more confidence in their daily life. Hypnosis, in itself is not a therapy but it is used in hypnotherapy to access the unconscious mind in the treatment of emotional, psychological and physical problems. During hypnosis the client remains in full control and is totally aware, just in a deeply relaxed state of mind. Karen often combines hypnotherapy practices with that of NLP ideas or EMDR psychotherapy approaches. NLP techniques are a collection of ideas and tools that can help to understand life more effectively. These set of ideas, aren’t necessarily truths or facts, they are just a set of ideas for a way of approaching life. The essence of NLP is about understanding yourself and about the understanding between you and other people. In conjunction with hypnosis and NLP, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) can help clients to release distressing or traumatic memories. The theory behind EMDR is that many psychological difficulties are the result of distressing life experiences which have not been stored properly in the limbic system of the brain and are said to be unprocessed or blocked. These traumatic memories may need some help to become processed and EMDR is another way to do this.

EMDR Process
EMDR utilises the natural healing ability of your body and after a thorough assessment clients are asked specific questions about a particular disturbing memory. Eye movements, similar to those during REM sleep will be recreated simply by asking the client to follow the therapist’s finger moving backwards and forwards across your visual field. Eye movements will last a short while and then stop and then you will be asked to report back on the experiences you have had during each of these sets of eye movements. Experiences during a session may include changes in thoughts, images and feelings. With repeated sets of eye movements, the memory tends to change in such a way that it loses its painful intensity and simply becomes a neutral memory of an event in the past. Other associated memories may also heal at the same time. This linking of related memories can lead to a dramatic and rapid improvement in many aspects of your life.
Karen is a qualified Meditation Teacher and as part of her specialist programmes often teaches mindfulness, self-hypnosis and EFT. EFT (Emotional Freedom Tapping) is a form of counselling intervention that draws on various theories of alternative medicine including acupuncture, NLP, energy medicine, and Thought Field Therapy (TFT). EFT and similar techniques are often discussed under the umbrella term “Energy Psychology”. EFT may be used to treat a wide variety of physical and psychological disorders, and as a simple form of self-administered therapy. EFT has an 80% success rate with all types of anxiety.

EFT Process
During a typical EFT session, the client will focus on a specific issue while tapping on “end points of the body’s energy meridians”. The procedure consists of the client rating the emotional intensity of their reaction on a Subjective Units of Distress Scale (SUDS) (scale for subjective measures of distress, calibrated 0-10) then repeating an orienting affirmation while rubbing or tapping specific points on the body, completed by the humming a tune. The emotional intensity is then rescored and repeated until no changes are noted in the emotional intensity.

Karen Breeze is qualified in a range of talking-therapies. She is as an Occupational Stress Management Consultant and GHR Acknowledged Supervisor. She offers face-to-face or on-line appointments to treat a wide range of issues and for an informal no obligation chat she can be contacted by:

Hilary Richardson

Hilary Richardson – Hypnotherapist with Counselling skills (Cert Hyp Cs) with additional training in Smoking/vaping cessation and Hypnotherapy for children. These are areas of special interest.
I am a registrant member with the National Hypnotherapy Society and adhere to their code of ethics. I am fully insured, and DBS checked.

About me.
Whilst raising my young twins in the 1980s I became interested in helping and supporting people to make a positive difference in their lives. Training with, and working voluntarily for, Victim Support gave me the opportunity to see how powerful the mind-body connection is. I saw for myself how, with the right tools and support, people could make positive and lasting life changes. I knew then that I wanted to learn more about the mind-body connection and good mental health.

I qualified in pre-school practice and worked in senior positions in childcare whilst raising my young children and have taken many courses to develop my knowledge of mental well-being and supporting resilience, in young people and adults. I have delivered short mindfulness sessions to children during the course of my work.

I researched hypnotherapy and became very excited about working with the subconscious mind to help people become their best selves. Having successfully experienced hypnotherapy, I knew I wanted to be able to use this totally natural state to help others, on a professional level. I believe that although we are shaped by our past, we are not defined by it. After qualifying as a hypnotherapist (Cert Hyp. CS) and taking additional training in specific areas- vaping/smoking cessation and Hypnotherapy for children, I am delighted to be able to help support others who are ready for positive, beneficial and lasting change.

Qualifications
I am a qualified hypnotherapist with Counselling skills. I am on the accredited Register of the National Hypnotherapy Society.

To complement my hypnotherapy qualification, I have certificates in:

  • Mindfulness (Practitioner level)
  • EFT (Practitioner level)

Hypnotherapy for children
Low self-esteem and lack of confidence often start in childhood.

Unquestionably, children and young people experience many different challenges and big emotions. From a young age children may struggle with situations, anxiety, worries, fears, habits and unwanted thoughts and feelings.

Hypnotherapy can help children take control of their minds. Children, typically, as part of their natural development spend a lot of time imagining, pretending and fantasising. They are usually very easily entranced by stories, TV programmes and films. Hypnotherapy draws on their imagination and it is a pleasant and enjoyable experience.

I have over 30 years experience with children, working at a senior level, in play and learning settings and offer fun and play- based techniques to engage your child and help them with a wide range of childhood problems.

I have done additional training in child hypnotherapy and this is very much my special area of interest.

I am registered with Horsforth Children’s Services. Certifications relevant to child therapy:

Women's Day Gift Session

Duncan Stephenson BA (Jt Hons), FCA, PDCH, MBSCH – Hypnova Therapy

Hi, I’m Duncan, a hypnotherapist with a professional diploma from the London College of Clinical Hypnosis. I’m also a member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy is a collaboration between you and your unconscious mind to address an issue that concerns you. The hypnotherapist facilitates that collaboration and, importantly, teaches you how to do it yourself.

Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation that allows you to communicate with your unconscious mind. It’s like sleep except that you are aware the whole time and you are in control – you cannot be made to do something you do not want to do. The unconscious manages the habits and thought patterns of your life and it can be encouraged to change them when any of those habits and patterns no longer serve you well.

My particular areas of interest are:

Sleep
Insomnia harms your mental and physical health and may even shorten your life. It is a modern malaise and an industry of lotions, candles and recordings has grown up to try and solve it. All of that can help, but the problem may just be in your head, so that is where we go to try and help you with this affliction.

Past-Life Regression
We like to believe that we have lived before and that we may live again. Whether or not it is so, past-life regression can provide you with an explanation of an issue you may have in this life, and may help you to resolve it. It may also give you an idea of your purpose in life.

Resolutions
New Year and birthday resolutions often have a short shelf-life, and personal development plans at work or in your home life may seem unattainable. Why not try harnessing your unconscious mind to map a path to achieving your personal resolutions or your SMART goals for work?

Performance
High performance relies on practice, practice, practice until your performance becomes unconscious, instinctive and effortless. Supporting that practice by proactively embedding it in your unconscious mind may make the difference you have been looking for. Think about how your golf might improve if you didn’t have to think about the swing and could just concentrate on where the ball is going.

I’m happy to talk through how the sessions work if you are at all apprehensive about experiencing hypnosis. You can call me on 07592-936863. There is a whole range of techniques we can use to address whatever may be preventing you from being your best you.

A suite of three sessions is generally recommended to help me understand your issues and your goals, to teach self-hypnosis as a life skill, to deliver therapy for the issue, and then to ensure that the therapy is embedded in your unconscious mind. However we can take it one session at a time and see how you feel.

Sessions are 55 minutes long and are priced at £80 per session.

Sessions may be booked with the Tower Clinic on 0113-267-2067 or by using the referral form via the Tower Clinic home page.
