Christina Dawson – Counselling for couples and individuals

BA (HONS), MA (Psychological Therapies (including Post Grad Cert Working with Diversity), Relate Trained & Qualified (Relate CC) BACP (Accredited and Registered)

I have 24 years counselling experience in a variety of settings which has included counselling at Relate, in GP surgeries and for EAPs (Employee Assistance Programmes).

I believe that counselling offers you the opportunity to explore and understand the source of your difficulties at your own pace, with time to think and reflect and then to decide what, if anything, to do about a particular issue. Counselling helps you to look at aspects of your life, relationships and yourself which you may not have been aware of, or been able to face before.

Sometimes hearing yourself telling your story to an attentive listener, who asks questions to gain a deeper understanding, can be very helpful. People describe a sense of relief and of feeling a ‘weight has been lifted’ when they can speak of matters they may have been keeping to themselves for a long time.

My Approach

I work Integratively using the Relational Model which means that sometimes a session might span your past, present and future. I help you to make links between events and experiences in your past and your present behaviour/issues. This linking and in-depth understanding then empowers you to consider ways in which you might want to change. You can evaluate your options and choices and decide which are best for your future well being. Coping strategies you might have developed as a child might not be serving you well as an adult.

At other times a session might focus on a ‘here and now’ problem, such as learning how to relax, strategies to cope with panic attacks or negative thinking. The counselling will be ‘tailored’ according to the issues you bring and what you need at any one session.

In couples therapy I act as a bridge to help each partner connect to the other’s world. Helping couples communicate with more emotional honesty and find ways of talking about the ‘difficult stuff’ safely is an important element of couples therapy.

I believe that the key to successful therapy is that client and counsellor are able to connect with each other. Counselling is about relationships: your relationships with family, friends and colleagues and yourself, and your therapeutic relationship with your counsellor. I work in partnership alongside my clients, exploring their difficulties and helping them achieve the outcomes from counselling that we have mutually agreed would be beneficial.

Client Reviews

“I saw Vicki just over a month ago to help me stop smoking. After years of smoking and finding excuses to justify the habit, I finally decided to bite the bullet! The session itself was pretty straight forward and I was also given an MP3 to listen to after my session, which I listened to most days for a couple of weeks. I threw my last packet of cigs in the bin during my session and haven’t even thought about it since. Best thing I’ve done in a long time.”

NA, Leeds

“I used to be terrified of flying and couldn’t stand the thought of getting on a plane. But after booking a holiday, I knew I had to somehow get over it. I had 5 sessions with Vicki and the week after my last session, I went on holiday. Both flights there and back went really well with no stress at all. I thought I might be anxious getting on the plane, but it didn’t happen! I also listened to the hypnosis recording I was given during my sessions and that helped me to relax during the flights as well. Hypnotherapy has been the best thing I’ve done in ages and I can’t recommend it enough.”

CB, Harrogate

“I had been having problems with anxiety for some time and it was affecting my work as well as going out with friends and family. After a few therapy sessions with Vicki, I feel a lot better and can now start looking forward to things again.”

DB, Leeds

“Vicki helped me to recover from a very difficult time in my life – I didn’t think I would ever feel OK again, but during the course of my sessions she helped me to feel better about myself and to understand that I do have a choice. I couldn’t imagine what the future might hold for me or what it might be like, but now I can and it looked a lot brighter now. Thank you so much.”

Nicola Furbisher

Hello from this little corner of West Yorkshire.

My name is Nicola Furbisher; I am 52 and I am a CPCAB-qualified therapeutic counsellor supporting people who are struggling and in distress. Often, they have things going on in their life that have become overwhelming, maybe too hard to deal with on their own. Often, they feel lost, broken, and can’t find a way through.

I offer a warm welcome, an open heart and time and space to be with them, to walk alongside them for as long or as short a period as they need.

They are the priority; they are in charge. I do not take over; I do not try and tell them what to do.

If you feel you would like to work with me, I promise I will be accepting, open and entirely trustworthy, working with you working at your pace to help you be where you need to be.

I have previously worked with clients suffering from trauma, grief, anxiety and depression, and with those who have suffered mental, physical or sexual abuse. I also help people with low self-esteem, and those who are suffering from work or family-related stress.

Alongside my private work I am a volunteer counsellor at Leeds Mind and at Support after Rape and Sexual Violence Leeds (SARSVL). I also volunteered at the Mosaic II (now closed), a specialist counselling offering support to adult survivors of sex abuse.

I am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and am fully signed up to their ethical framework.

I had a different life before all of the above. Previously I was a journalist for 30 years and, latterly, the Editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post & Managing Editor, Yorkshire Post. I’m a Yorkshire lass, I lived in Brussels, I love being by the sea, but my roots are in landlocked Brighouse.

I had a special boy called Thomas who died in 2008. I battled on, I thought I was fine. I wasn’t. A wonderful counsellor saved me – and in saving me, I found a new path.

I appreciate this is a lot to take in. Please contact me if you think I can help you. I promise warmth, acceptance, and a space for you to be whatever you need to be.

Rhiannon Rees

About Me
I am an Integrative, Relational Counsellor that helps individuals to navigate their loss.

Transitions and changes in life can leave you feeling bereaved and struggling to cope. You may feel upset, overwhelmed and bewildered as you try to come to terms with a different, and possibly unwanted, set of life circumstances.

Loss of a job or career you cherished, a role or a sense of identity or a past or future you thought you would have, can all take their toll. Relationship breakdown and divorce or death of a loved one may have left you feeling alone and empty, without hope or purpose.

You may feel trapped between needing to carry on with life and feeling like you just can’t cope anymore. Perhaps you feel unable to ask friends and family for support, feeling that they won’t understand or that you’ll burden them. You may feel anger, guilt and confusion. The depression and sadness can feel like a heavy burden to carry. You don’t need to carry this burden alone anymore.

My Approach
I help individuals to; come to a deeper understanding of themselves and their loss, explore their emotions and come to terms with the changes facing them. This is done through the provision of a safe space where you can feel supported, heard and held.

I offer warmth, empathy and a non-judgemental acceptance as I seek to understand you and your experience. I work at your pace, enabling you to engage with your feelings without them overwhelming you. Through this process I can support you to feel brighter about your life, more resilient and better able to cope.

Issues I work with:
Bereavement
Loss
Life Transitions

Other Issues I work with:
Loneliness
Depression
Family issues
Relationship problems
Self Esteem
Stress
Trauma
Abuse
Bullying

Affairs and betrayals
Separation and divorce

As an Integrative Relational Counsellor, I draw on Humanistic and Person-Centred modalities, the psychodynamics of relationships, existentialism and CBT, working flexibly in a way that will best suite you. I offer both short and long-term therapy.

Other Information
Each session lasts 50 minutes and costs £50.
I offer flexible appointment times.
I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy and am registered as an Individual Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

She draws from different approaches and adapts them in order to meet individual client’s needs, as she believes that we are all much more complex beings with our own unique history and experiences, hence why there is not a one-size fits all model of therapy.

Soula offers a free 15 minutes telephone consultation.
