What is a Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional Therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of health, peak performance and individual care. Nutritional therapy practitioners use a wide range of tools to assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances and understand how these may contribute to an individual’s symptoms and health concerns. This approach allows them to work with individuals to address nutritional balance and help support the body towards maintaining health. Nutritional therapy is recognised as a complementary medicine and is relevant for individuals with chronic conditions, as well as those looking for support to enhance their health and wellbeing.

Practitioners consider each individual to be unique and recommend personalized nutrition and lifestyle programmes rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Practitioners never recommend nutritional therapy as a replacement for medical advice and always refer any client with ‘red flag’ signs or symptoms to their medical professional. They will also frequently work alongside a medical professional and will communicate with other healthcare professionals involved in the client’s care to explain any nutritional therapy programme that has been provided.

What does a Nutritional Therapist do?

Before the first consultation, the practitioner usually provides a health and nutrition questionnaire for the client to complete. An initial consultation typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes, and in this time the practitioner asks detailed questions about current health concerns, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, medical history, family history, lifestyle, levels of physical activity, use of medication and supplements and diet. The practitioner then evaluates individual needs and uses the extensive evidence base for nutritional science to develop a personalised, safe and effective nutrition and lifestyle programme.

Follow up consultations are generally after four weeks in order to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments. Further follow-ups may be required depending on each individual situation.

Jane Welborn – Nutritional Therapist

My name is Jane and I believe passionately that good diet and lifestyle choices are incredibly powerful tools in enabling people to live longer, healthier and happier lives.
Our bodies are resilient and put up with the stresses and strains modern living demands of them, yet gradually, the cracks begin to appear… niggling symptoms that we tend to ignore begin to surface; we may begin to gain a little weight, have the odd headache or just begin to feel tired a lot of the time. If these symptoms are left untreated a state of ill-health begins to develop.

The body has an amazing way to heal itself with nutrition. I believe that by adding the correct nourishment along with a healthy lifestyle, your body will thank you for it.The world of nutritional advice can seem so overwhelming, confusing and contradictory. Often when we try to make positive changes, we can find that we have folIowed the wrong advice and far from seeing improvements we can even make our problems worse! I want to help people to navigate this confusing world and believe that sharing what I have learnt through both my own personal experience and years of training, I can help others to discover what good nutrition and lifestyle choices can do for them too!

Here are a few of the problems that I, as a Nutritional Therapist can help you with:

  • IBS symptoms
  • Digestive imbalances
  • Weight problems
  • Skin conditions
  • Lack of energy
  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Better mental wellbeing
  • Food allergies
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Osteoporosis
  • Crohns or Colitis
  • Sugar cravings
  • Hormone imbalances
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Sleep
  • Preparing for pregnancy/ fertility problems, and many more!

A little about me;

Like most of us I have been on my own journey with my health and diet over the years. As a teenager I suffered from weight gain, anxiety issues, a mild eating disorder and IBS. Like many teenagers I loved junk food and this contributed to my health problems. When at the age of 18, I became vegetarian and took up exercise I found that my IBS gradually improved! (although I still had much to learn!) Many years later, when working as an advocate for adults with mental health problems, I saw many instances where I thought that improved nutrition could have a positive impact on the mental health of individuals and became interested in exploring the subject of nutrition. Being ready for a change of career, I decided to study nutrition at the University of West London where I gained a BSc in Nutritional Therapy.

I now run my own business, Jane Welborn Nutrition, which aims to empower my clients with the support and knowledge they need to make the healthiest food choices for them, for life. I am passionate about what I do and I hope this is evident in my work.

Atavia Minoudis

Orthomolecular Nutritional Therapy Consultant
BSc Psychology & Counselling

Living a life of ‘dis- ease’ should not be the norm.
Working alongside the Clinic for Orthomolecular Nutritional Medicine in Athens, I work closely with clients to apply comprehensive health analyses, examining which body systems are under stress (e.g. the gut, detoxification systems, inflammatory pathways).

Rather than the ‘symptom- pill’ approach, in clinic we will work collaboratively to identify the underlying factors that are driving your symptoms of ill health. This approach enables us to understand where things are going wrong and understand what the body needs to restore itself to health.

Working holistically with individuals, I aim to understand each person’s unique biological markers, nutrient levels, medical history and individual needs, creating unique evidenced based Nutritional Therapy plans.

Many things can put roadblocks in the way to wellness, including genetics, epigenetics, toxin exposure, hormonal imbalance, stress, trauma, poor lifestyle/ diet, and chronic infection or inflammation. It is my job to identify the catalysts that have brought you to a stage of ill health and apply science-based interventions to empower you to overcome these limitations.

I utilise a wide range of optional clinical testing methods, including gut function, stool tests, hormonal screenings and parasitology, working collaboratively with clients, implementing evidence-based protocols that are sustainable that do not limit your social life or enjoyment of food.

I am a firm believer that food – and life itself – is to be enjoyed. Nutritional Therapy should enhance this experience, not limit it.

With an additional BSc in Psychology & Counselling, and CPCAB accredited training, I am equipped to work holistically with clients, utilising therapeutic approaches and strategies to enable you to overcome the barriers to health you may have been facing.

Did you know that ill health derives from damaged and diseased cells?

The human body is made up of 15 TRILLION of them. From our blood to our skin, every part of our body is comprised of cells.

The average human is exposed to 700,000 cell damaging toxic chemicals every single day- in perfumes, household cleaning products, plastic food containers and cosmetics to name but a few.

These toxins can cause cell damage or mutations, resulting in cellular dysfunction and subsequent symptoms ranging from hormonal imbalances to gut and digestive problems.

Orthmolecular Nutritional Therapy focuses not on only managing the symptoms of ill health, but on detoxifying and correcting this damage, therefore encouraging self- healing of the body.

This goes much deeper than just food, although this is integral in a healthy body and mind. It also seeks to understand your unique biological markers, toxin exposure and symptom triggers, and equip you with the armour your body needs to protect itself from further damage.

In clinic I work with individuals to identify the above, implementing unique evidenced based protocols to support you back to optimal health.
